So far yet so near

Monasticism for a new world

So far yet so near

The establishment of the Alliance for International Monasticism (AIM) became necessary in 1961 due to the remarkable expansion of monasteries of Benedictine obedience. Today it covers nearly 450 communities in Africa, Latin America, and Asia. This organisation, fragile at the beginning, supported by the monastic Orders, has accompanied the life of new foundations: their coordination, mutual aid, formation, and financial support. This kind of fraternal presence has contributed to the emerging of a truly lived-out universal communion. It was also the origin of the Monastic Interreligious Dialogue, particularly with the Buddhist monks of Tibet and Japan. AIM’s mysterious history, the history of the solidarity and autonomy of monasteries following St Benedict, writes new pages in monastic history.
