 | What does culture mean? A chain of texts as in ancient oriental monasticism with its Hellenistic background or in medieval Montecassino where monks create new traditions? Does it signify the identity of a population like that of the Aboriginals which European monks and sisters helped to promote already in the nineteenth century? Is culture nowadays not becoming a new religion which plagues many European monasteries? These are only some of the many items treated at the third international Monastic Symposium «Monasticism between Culture and Cultures» held in Rome, June 8-11, 2011, at the Pontifical Athenaeum of Sant’Anselmo. This volume presents the proceedings of the symposium under eight headings: Oriental Monasticism – Western Monasticism – Regulae Benedicti Studia – New Monastic Communities – Non-Christian Monasticism – Monasticism and Art – Postmodernism and Various Solutions. Noteworthy is the fact that the forty authors are not only theologians, philosophers, historians and philologists, but also sociologists and artists. This shows that each period must once more probe what kind of „fuga mundi“ is the essence of monasticism.  |

 | The year 2009 marked the convergence of a number of anniversaries involving the missionary activity of monastic men and women: the centenary of the death of Abbot Franz Pfanner, founder of Mariannhill (1909), the centenary of the Asian Mission of the Benedictines of St. Ottilien (1909), the centenary of the Tutzing Mission to Brazil (1909), the bicentenary of the birth of Boniface Wimmer (1809), and the millennium of the martyrdom of St Bruno of Querfurt (promoter of the “evangelium paganorum” as an essential monastic value) and his Camaldolese companions as missionaries in East Prussia and Poland (1009). These anniversaries offered the occasion for extended historical and theological reflection on the relationship between monasticism and mission. Although in the popular mind the notions of “mission” and “monasticism” may seem to represent divergent concepts—the outward-bound energy of the church on the one hand, and its contemplative core on the other—a closer look at the historical realities, ancient, medieval, and modern, does not support this dichotomy. |

 | The title of this collection of essays is meant to reflect the flow of ideas in the ancient world from east to west, especially in the area around the Mediterranean. Two great rivers, the Nile and the Rhone, represent symbolically two cultural poles: Egypt, one of the cradles of civilization in the ancient world, already the repository of ancient wisdom in the eyes of the Greeks, and Gaul, younger but by the fourth century AD already the recipient of eastern influences for over a thousand years. The flow of ideas from east to west in the ancient world was particularly true of monasticism, a movement that arose in the East, in Egypt, Palestine, and Syria, then attracted travelers from the West and finally was imitated in the West. The title reflects also the author’s particular interests, which include Egyptian monasticism and early Western monasticism, especially that represented by John Cassian and those for whom he wrote in southern Gaul in the early fifth century. Through his writings Egyptian monasticism came to influence not only early fifth century monasticism in southern Gaul, but far beyond, indeed all of Western monasticism. His works were recommended by the Rule of Benedict, which, after the Carolingian monastic reform in the ninth century, came to dominate Western monasticism. |

 | Las Didascalias de Doroteo de Gaza han acompañado la historia de la espiritualidad cristiana. Tal vez por la sencillez de su doctrina y consejos, sus escritos fueron considerados poco más que simples textos piadosos, pero sin consistencia teológica alguna. Una lectura atenta de las Didascalias de Doroteo deja sin embargo percibir la presencia de un vocabulario muy cuidado que recorre toda la obra y recibe distintas resonancias a lo largo de su desarrollo. Ello deja entrever un pensamiento unificado, con constantes que no sólo se repiten, sino que se enriquecen progresivamente y concuerdan desde sus distintas ubicaciones en el texto. La presencia del armado retórico de las Didascalias pone, ante los ojos del lector, una imagen más clara de Doroteo y del mundo cultural en que vivían los cristianos del siglo VI en Gaza. En efecto, estamos no sólo ante un gran escritor, sino además ante uno de los grandes exponentes de una retórica verdaderamente cristiana, heredera de los grandes Capadocios. Gracias a ello su obra puede ser contada entre aquellas que llevan el nombre de “Teología Monástica”. Da alcuni decenni «nessuno può più dubitare che Evagrio sia uno dei nomi più importanti della storia della spiritualità, uno di quelli che non soltanto segnano una svolta decisiva, ma evocano un’autentica mutazione spirituale» (L. Bouyer). Nella sua dottrina troviamo in unasintesi originale e accattivante, l’insegnamento fondamentalmente biblico e sperimentale dei primi padri del deserto, idee di filosofia neoplatonica, di teologia cappadoce e uno sguardo psicologico acutissimo. Proponiamo qui uno studio dell’uso, dell’interpretazione e del ruolo della Bibbia nella dottrina di Evagrio Pontico. Che i monaci egiziani abbiano letto e interpretato la Parola di Dio è un dato di fatto confermato da tutte le fonti letterarie. The Principle of Servitude in Bérulle
 | Pierre de Bérulle (1575-1629) has received scant attention from scholars in the English-speaking world. When he does enter the spotlight, it tends to be as originator of the ‘French School of Spirituality’. One could easily fancy him rapt in the hush of an ivory tower, whereas in fact Bérulle was constantly on the move, scouring Spain for nuns to export the Teresian Carmel, visiting the Roman Curia as an envoy of Louis XIII, or overseeing projects of ecclesiastical reform all over France. This study demonstrates the fundamental coherence of Bérulle’s varied accomplishments. Whether in speculative theology or public life, he presupposed the principle of ‘servitude’. This notion, repulsive to many, occasioned fierce controversy, yet Bérulle remained attached to it. It articulated the core of his theological anthropology as a simultaneous image for the unfreedom of the Old Adam enslaved by sin and for the emancipation of the New Adam living in redemptive bondage to Jesus. Accumulated layers of meaning led to the development of ‘servitude’ as a principle of action. Thus it migrated from the theological sphere into that of politics. Erik Varden traces the itinerary of this singular metaphor, casting new light on the career of a man who did much to form the sensibility of the grand siècle. |

A History of the Breaking of Bread in Roman Rite
 | The four biblical versions of the institution narrative give a simple description of the ritual observed by Jesus, who, while at table took a loaf, praised or blessed or gave thanks, broke the loaf, and gave it to his disciples saying, “Take! Eat! This is my body”. In this description, breaking is the only preparatory act between blessing and distribution. By contrast, the eighth-century Ordo romanus I has a more involved series of preparatory and communion rites, of which breaking the loaves is prominent. These rites were even more complicated in the Missale romanum of 1570, but only a single wafer-host would be broken, unseen by anyone other than the priest and at a different point in the sequence of elements. Four hundred years later in the newly reformed Missale romanum the fraction is in yet a different place, but it is again conspicuous. Clearly these rites in the Roman liturgy have undergone much movement or upheaval, even if so slowly as to go unnoticed. The historical data show that a new sort of fraction came into existence, prompted by confusion and misunder-standing, while the original practice slowly vanished due to other forces. Any adequate history of the celebration of the eucharist in the Roman rite must acknowledge this structural upheaval, and be able to explain it. |

Anselmo ha proseguito infatti il suo ventennale cammino dei Congressi internazionali, approdando al tema della sacramentalità della liturgia che trova la sua sorgente in un celebre passo della Costituzione liturgica (SC 48). Nell’esperienza e nel cammino della riflessione teologica, specie nell’ultimo cinquantennio con l’avvento del Movimento liturgico e della considerazione della cosiddetta “questione liturgica” come costitutiva della riflessione sulla fede e costitutiva del sacramento, la sacramentalità della liturgia è diventata una realtà che ha suscitato e messo in risalto angolature di sensibilità, attenzioni e considerazioni teologiche differenti, emerse nello stesso Congresso. L’approfondimento teologico avvenuto nell’arco di questi giorni, grazie al prezioso apporto dei diversi relatori affidato alle righe di queste pagine, ha fatto emergere perciò l’immagine di un cammino non concluso, ma ancora da percorrere fino in fondo. Il Congresso ha voluto, indicare una via o meglio “la” via per affrontare il discorso teologico: l’interdisciplinarietà, non come “concessione” alla scienza, ma come “modo” di fare scienza. Nel consegnare ai lettori questo volume ci auguriamo di poter contribuire alla riflessione teologica sulla sacramentalità della liturgia, per ritus et preces.
